Best Free AI Chatbot for Websites (2026)

Six AI chatbots with a real free plan or free tier for websites, compared on monthly limits, what the free plan includes and where the free ride ends.

Best free AI chatbot for websites: six tools with a real free tier

Six tools offer a free way to put an AI chatbot on a website: Botpress, Tidio, Elfsight, AnveVoice, Typebot and tawk.to. They differ sharply in how much free usage you get and what stops working at the limit, which is what this page compares. Researched from the sources below on 2026-10-14. AnveVoice is our product and appears in this list. Other tools are described from their own websites, checked on 2026-10-14. We do not receive payment from any tool listed.

How we chose

Free plans are marketing, so we read the limits. We listed tools whose own pricing pages state a free tier that includes an AI or chatbot feature, then ordered them by how usable the free tier is for a real small site.

  • Size of the free allowance (weighted most), in the unit each vendor uses: conversations, messages, chats or tokens.
  • Whether AI answering is actually included in the free tier, not only a scripted bot or a trial.
  • What happens at the limit: hard stop, automatic upgrade or overage charges.
  • Setup without a developer, and whether the widget carries the vendor's branding.
  • A believable next step up in price once you outgrow the free tier.

The shortlist at a glance

Tools are ordered by fit to the criteria above, not by price or popularity. Pricing columns describe how each vendor charges, using the vendor's own pricing page checked on 2026-10-14.

1. Botpress: the most generous free AI allowance on paper

Botpress's free plan is $0 a month with 100 conversations a month, 3 seats and 3 AI agents, and it states there are no overages. It also says the AI usage behind each conversation, valued at $0.10, is covered by Botpress. Embedding is a script tag, with guides for WordPress, Wix and Webflow. A conversation needs at least two end-user messages to count, which is friendlier than counting every chat opened. The first paid step is Plus at $150 a month billed annually (250 conversations), a big jump from free. Limitation: it is a builder aimed at developers and support teams, so expect a learning curve compared with a paste-and-go widget, and voice is listed only on Enterprise.

2. Tidio: free live chat plus its Lyro AI agent

Tidio's free plan is $0 a month with 10 seats and 50 billable conversations. Its Lyro AI agent includes the first 50 conversations free on a lifetime basis, and Lyro only answers from sources you approve, handing off with the full chat history. Tidio lists a WordPress plugin and a Shopify app. The step up is Starter at $24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations (the page does not say whether that figure is monthly or annual billing). Lyro on its own starts at $32.50 a month for 50 Lyro conversations. Limitation: 50 free conversations is a tight ceiling for a busy store, and the product is oriented to ecommerce more than to general sites.

3. Elfsight AI Chatbot Widget: a no-code widget with a free forever tier

Elfsight's AI chatbot widget has a free forever plan with core features, 10M characters of knowledge storage and 50 messages a month, no card required. You train it on files, Q&A entries and website pages, then paste the embed code into your HTML. It also lists booking through Calendly or Cal.com and handoff to a human. The paid ladder starts low: Basic is $5 a month billed yearly ($6 monthly), priced by widget views, with higher plans up to $80 a month. Limitation: 50 messages a month is small, and the pricing page gives general widget-view limits without chatbot-specific message caps for paid tiers. Text only, with no voice.

4. AnveVoice: free voice and chat with a token allowance

AnveVoice's Free plan is $0 with 50,000 tokens a month and one bot, no card needed. Unlike the text widgets above, visitors can speak to it in the browser, and it answers from the site's own content and can fill the site's own forms. Install is one script tag, with WordPress and Shopify options. Paid tiers are flat: Growth $39 a month (₹2,999) for 2M tokens and 5 bots, Scale $129 (₹9,999) for 8M tokens and unlimited bots. Limitation: the allowance is measured in tokens, so you need to test real conversations to see how many it covers, and it is website only. It sits mid-list here because a text-only visitor base gets less from its voice features.

5. Typebot: open-source flow builder with 200 free chats

Typebot is an open-source no-code builder for conversational flows. The free plan is $0 with unlimited typebots and 200 chats a month, and bots embed as containers, popups or chat bubbles on sites including WordPress, Shopify, React, Next.js, Webflow and Framer. It connects to OpenAI and other AI providers through its building blocks. Starter is $39 a month for 2,000 chats and Pro is $89 for 10,000; there is no annual option. Limitation: it is built around scripted or AI-assisted flows rather than a bot that answers from your whole site, and when you pass your limit the plan upgrades to the next tier automatically (Starter overage is $10 per 500 extra chats), so watch usage.

6. tawk.to: free live chat with a small AI add-on

tawk.to is best known for free live chat: the core widget, knowledge base and ticketing cost nothing, and a forever-free AI Assist plan covers limited chat volume. AI Assist answers from uploaded files and linked help pages with human review, and installation is one JavaScript snippet. Removing the 'Powered by tawk.to' branding costs $29 a month, and AI Assist from $29 a month. Hired live chat agents start at $1 an hour. Limitation: the AI is an add-on to a human-first product, and several messaging channels (Facebook, RCS, Telegram, SMS) are marked beta or coming soon on the pricing page.

Reading free limits honestly

The units are not comparable. A Botpress 'conversation' needs two visitor messages, a Tidio 'billable conversation' counts differently, Elfsight counts messages, Typebot counts chats and AnveVoice counts tokens. Before you commit, translate each limit into your own traffic: how many visitors start a chat in a typical month? Also check what you lose when you hit the cap. Botpress states no overages; Typebot upgrades you automatically; others pause the AI. A free plan that silently stops answering during a busy week is worse than a modest paid plan.

When free is not enough

  • You need more than a few hundred chats a month: compare the first paid step, not the free tier.
  • You need branding removed: tawk.to charges $29 a month for it, and Botpress offers whitelabel webchat from its Plus plan.
  • You need voice or phone: free text widgets will not cover it; see our voice roundups.
