Add a Voice AI Agent to Shopify (App or Theme Code)
Install the AnveVoice voice agent on Shopify from the official App Store listing, or paste the tag into theme.liquid. Covers checkout limits and theme updates.
How to add AnveVoice to a Shopify store
Shopify is the one platform where AnveVoice has an official listing: AnveVoice: Voice AI Chatbot on the Shopify App Store, with a Free plan. Install the app and you are done, with no theme edits. If you prefer to control the code yourself, the second method pastes the script tag into theme.liquid. Steps checked against the official documentation on 2026-10-14.
At a glance
- Method 1 (recommended): Install the AnveVoice app from apps.shopify.com/anvevoice; its listing says one-click, no theme edits
- Method 2: Online Store → Themes → Edit code → layout/theme.liquid, tag before </body>
- Plan limits: App has a Free plan; theme code can be edited only on a purchased theme, per Shopify's help center
- Time: About 2 minutes for either method
Which method to choose
Use the app unless you have a reason not to. It installs from the Shopify App Store, it stays out of your theme files, and a theme switch or update cannot silently remove it. Shopify's own help center says to edit theme code only if you cannot achieve the change with an app or the theme editor, which describes this situation exactly. Choose theme code if you manage your store as code, want the tag in version control, run a staging theme, or want to see precisely which script loads. Do not do both: AnveVoice ignores a second copy on the same page, but two installation paths make the next change confusing.
Method 1: install the official AnveVoice app
The app listing at apps.shopify.com/anvevoice is titled AnveVoice: Voice AI Chatbot and describes a real-time voice assistant that answers product, shipping and returns questions, trains on your products, pages and policies, and speaks in male or female voices across 50+ languages. It calls the installation one-click, going live in minutes with one script and no theme edits. The listing's permissions section mentions access to online store pages, script tags and theme, so the app adds its code for you. The listing does not publish screen-by-screen onboarding, so the steps below stay at the level it documents; follow the prompts the app shows after installing. The listing also warns that the app is not compatible with some stores and links to Shopify's app compatibility page. If Shopify shows that message when you try to install, use Method 2 below instead.
- 1. Open the listing — Go to apps.shopify.com/anvevoice while signed in to the Shopify account that owns your store, or search the Shopify App Store for AnveVoice.
- 2. Install on the right store — Click Install and choose the store when Shopify asks. Review the permissions the app requests and approve them if you are happy to continue.
- 3. Complete the in-app setup — Follow the app's own setup screens inside the Shopify admin. The voice agent trains from your store content, so give it a moment, then connect or confirm your AnveVoice account if the app asks.
- 4. Choose a plan — The listing shows Free ($0, 1 voice bot, 50K tokens/month), Growth ($39/month, 5 voice embeds, 2M tokens/month) and Scale ($129/month, unlimited embeds, 8M tokens/month), billed in USD through Shopify. Start on Free; you can upgrade later.
- 5. Open your storefront — Visit the live store in a private window and look for the round microphone button.
Method 2: paste the tag into theme.liquid
Shopify's layout documentation names theme.liquid as the default layout that every theme must include; it wraps every storefront page, which makes it the right file for a site-wide script. Shopify's help center states that you can edit theme code only after you have purchased the theme, so a trial of a paid theme will not allow it.
- 1. Duplicate your theme first — In the Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes, open the actions menu on your live theme and choose Duplicate. Shopify recommends a backup copy so you can discard changes and start again.
- 2. Open the code editor — On the copy (or on the live theme once you are confident), open the actions menu and choose Edit code.
- 3. Open theme.liquid — In the Layout folder click theme.liquid. Search the file for </body> with Ctrl+F or Cmd+F.
- 4. Paste the tag — Add the AnveVoice line on its own line directly above </body>. Do not touch the content_for_header object in the head; Shopify says it must stay in the head and should not be modified. Code: <script src="https://anvevoice.app/embed.js?embedId=YOUR_EMBED_ID" async></script>
- 5. Save and publish the duplicate — Save with Ctrl+S or Cmd+S. If you edited a copy, preview it, then publish it from Online Store → Themes.
Shopify-specific gotchas
Theme updates. Shopify warns that if code changes are incompatible with a theme update, all of your code changes are removed in the updated copy. After you update the theme or move to a new one, check theme.liquid again, or use the app method which does not live in the theme. Checkout. theme.liquid applies to storefront pages. Shopify's layouts documentation says checkout layouts are available only to Plus merchants and that checkout.liquid is unsupported for the Information, Shipping and Payment steps. Expect the voice button on product, collection, cart and content pages, not inside the checkout flow. Parser-blocking scripts. Shopify's Theme Check flags parser-blocking scripts. The AnveVoice tag has the async attribute, so it does not block parsing.
Check that it works
- 1. Load the storefront in a private window — Use the live URL. If a storefront password is enabled, enter it first.
- 2. Test the button — Click the microphone, allow the browser prompt, and ask about a product, shipping or returns. HTTPS is required and Shopify stores are served over it.
- 3. Test a product page and a collection page — The button should appear on both. If it appears on neither, re-check the install method you used.
Common problems on Shopify
- App installs but no button: finish the in-app setup, then clear the store's browser cache and reload in a private window.
- Edit code is greyed out or missing: the theme is an unpurchased trial of a paid theme.
- Button disappeared after a theme change: Method 2 lives in the old theme's files. Re-add it or switch to the app.
- Two buttons: both methods are active. Remove the tag from theme.liquid if you installed the app.
- No button at checkout: expected, as explained above.
