Add the AnveVoice voice agent to a Big Cartel shop using the Integration Code Body field in Shop designer, a paid-plan feature that survives theme changes.

How to add AnveVoice to a Big Cartel shop

Big Cartel has a purpose-built place for third-party scripts: Shop designer → Code tab → Integration Code. Click Body, paste the AnveVoice tag, and publish. It needs a paid plan, because shops on the free Gold plan only get CSS access, and the checkout page cannot be edited at all. Steps checked against the official documentation on 2026-10-14.

Before you start

Get your AnveVoice embed ID from app.anvevoice.app. The AnveVoice Free plan costs nothing and needs no card, but the Big Cartel side does require a paid shop plan, so sort that out first. Big Cartel themes are written in Liquid, and Big Cartel has two code areas that are easy to confuse. The Advanced Theme Code section is for editing the template HTML itself. The Integration Code section is for third-party scripts and tags. Big Cartel's help center tells you to use Integration Code for scripts, and for good reason: it keeps your snippet when you change themes.

1. Copy the tag — The next line is everything AnveVoice needs. Swap YOUR_EMBED_ID for the value from your dashboard. If you prefer the button on the left or a dark panel, add &position=bottom-left or &theme=dark to the URL. Code: <script src="https://anvevoice.app/embed.js?embedId=YOUR_EMBED_ID" async></script>

Plan: why the free Gold plan will not work

Big Cartel's Integration Code article states that all shops on paid plans have full access to the Integration Code section and can use third-party scripts and tags. Shops on the free Gold plan only have access to their CSS for simple changes to style elements. Its Advanced Theme Code article repeats that editing code is an exclusive feature for sellers on premium plans. The article adds that scripts stay saved in your template until you remove them or downgrade to the free Gold plan. If you ever downgrade, the AnveVoice tag goes away with the paid features, so plan for that.

Add the tag to Integration Code

Big Cartel says that all files must be hosted externally and that file uploads are not supported for scripts. AnveVoice loads from anvevoice.app, so nothing needs uploading.

1. Open Shop designer — Log in at app.bigcartel.com and click Shop designer in the sidebar.
2. Select the Code tab — Open the Code tab. You will see the Integration Code section above the Advanced template code area.
3. Click Body — Under Integration Code there are two buttons: Head places your code before the closing head tag and Body places it before the closing body tag. Click Body for AnveVoice.
4. Paste and click Done — Paste the script line into the editor that opens and click Done.
5. Publish — Click Publish to commit the change. Discard undoes edits. If you click Exit instead, your changes are auto-saved but not published, so the voice button will not be live yet.

Big Cartel-specific gotchas

Checkout is off limits. Big Cartel states that the checkout page is not editable at this time, even though most other shop pages accept advanced customisation. Expect the voice button on your storefront and product pages but not on the checkout step. Theme changes. Code placed in the Advanced template code section is deleted if you switch or update your theme, according to Big Cartel. Integration Code is the exception, so keep the AnveVoice tag there. If you previously added tags straight into Advanced Theme Code, Big Cartel says they keep working, but recommends moving them into Integration Code before you change or update the theme. Backups. Big Cartel offers a way to download your theme code. Take a copy before experimenting in the Advanced section; it does not apply to the tag you add in Integration Code, which stays separate.

Check that it works

1. Open your live shop in a private window — Use the public store address so you see the published version.
2. Find the microphone button — It appears bottom-right by default. Click it, allow microphone access, and ask a question about shipping or a product.
3. Try a product page and the cart — Both are normal shop pages, so the button should load. The checkout step will not show it.

Common problems on Big Cartel

No Integration Code section: you are on the free Gold plan.
Edited but not live: the changes were saved by Exit but never published. Return to Shop designer and click Publish.
Button gone after a downgrade: Big Cartel removes Integration Code scripts when a shop returns to the free Gold plan.
Pasted into Advanced template code: it will be lost on a theme update. Move it to Integration Code.
Two buttons: the tag is in both Head and Body. Keep only Body.
